Dryer Vent & Booster Fan Cleaning
What Is A Booster Fan For A Dryer Vent?
The maximum length of a dryer vent is 35 feet. In addition, for every 90 degree angle you must deduct footage of the total. Every 90 degree joint will reduce the velocity coming out of the dryer vent. Therefore, each angle should shorten the total length of the dryer vent. So, what can you do in case you have to run a longer vent than allowed by code? Well, for that purpose you can attach a booster fan in the middle of the dryer vent in order to increase the air velocity inside your dryer vent.
How Does The Booster Fan Work?
The booster fan has a sensor that turns on the booster fan every time it senses air flow pushing forward. Then the booster fan begins to spin and creates a constant high velocity air flow in your vent. The high velocity will wind down a couple of minutes after the air flow pushing in on the sensor will stop.
Can The Booster Fan Cause Any Problem With The Dryer Vent?
Yes, the booster fans have a downside. Over time the amount of lint flying through the dryer vent will attach to the blades of the booster fan. Therefore, with time it will cause the booster fan to get stuck with increased amount of lint and chunks of lint in your booster fan. When you booster fan is completely stuck, it will act as a blockage to your air flow. Meaning, you will not be able to dry your clothes properly and it will pose a fire hazard to your dryer.
Dryer Vent Cleaning & Booster Fan Cleaning
In order to solve the problem of the clogged booster fan you will have to detach it from the dryer and from the electricity. It is dangerous to clean the booster fan blades without disconnecting it from the power outlet. Once you have cleared both sides of the booster fan from the accumulated lint you can finish cleaning the dryer vent.
The dryer vent cleaning should be done carefully without getting the brush stuck in the booster fan blades, and without damaging the blades. Dryer vent cleaning with a booster fan should be practiced periodically in order to prevent any issues with the dryer.
Typically you will find booster fans in commercial vents and in homes where the vent is extra long.
